During the field visit, we learned about the impacts of GEJE (Great East Japan Earthquake) 2011 and its recovery plans. We interviewed many stakeholders related to social, economic, and environmental perspectives to understand the disaster impact locally. We realised that Onagawa stakeholders were all working together to improve the quality of life for the community and also, all stakeholders are eagerly working to make a difference by creating a new environment for future generations. In addition, there are so many new things we learned during the interview with the community -- new things that we can't learn from books or journals like their experiences and their perceptions. This was a valuable experience that broadened our understanding of the community and its relationship to disasters. Finally, I'd like to thank the people of Onagawa for their warm welcome and I would also like to express my gratitude to the KIZUNA project for providing me with this wonderful opportunity. Through field research, we learned that the reconstruction plan for Onagawa was entrusted to young people around 40 years old at the time of the disaster.
The future of Onagawa for these young people was to live with the sea. Against this background, Onagawa realised the development of a town with a view of the sea.
We have learned about the culture, economy, sea, and forest environment of Onagawa's coastal areas through our field research.
We have experienced the external events of Onagawa's post-disaster reconstruction as described in articles and the media, along with the diversity of Onagawa's culture and history linked to the post-disaster, resident-led reconstruction.
In conducting the actual research, we taught online interviews and analyses beforehand, but by actually visiting Onagawa, we could produce a report that embodies the people and culture there.
We would like to thank the people of Onagawa for allowing us to interview them while taking care to prevent the spread of COVID-19. I would like to thank the KIZUNA project for giving me this opportunity.
Finally, I would like to offer a silent prayer for the repose of the souls of the many people who lost their lives in the Great East Japan Earthquake.
